In his youth, Marlin was a wayfarer. Never liking to stay in one place too long, his several-year journey across the continent one day led him across the sea and landed him in one of the tranquil fishing communities nestled in Fire Bay, Malevonain...where he finally found something worth settling down for.

Malevonain's history is steeped in controversy, the most world-famous being the government-led genetic trials to merge animal DNA into the human genome. Those infamous attempts to advance humanity to a new stage of evolution may have failed, but its influence lives on in the descendants of those test subjects. As an outsider, Marlin had been unsure what to expect from his stay in the country. But he certainly hadn't expected to find the love of his life in the beaked face of an octopus hybrid named Marla.

Today, Marlin lives happily with his beloved wife and daughter, having made their cosy family abode atop their own bustling restaurant. It's hard running a business whilst also trying to raise an increasingly eccentric teenaged octopus girl (first-time fatherhood is rough enough without throwing eight extra limbs into the mix), but Marlin wouldn't change a thing. Every evening, Ayling's opens its doors to the weird and wonderful (and mostly nocturnal) marine-hybrids who live and work Fire Bay, and have made the restaurant a usual part of their day, knowing that they'll always be offered service with a smile.
